The Power of Friendship

The Power of Friendship
Posted By: Vernell Gore on May 28, 2009

There are some people we come into the lives of that are blessings in disguse. They are more than chance encounters, they are divine appointments. The word says a friend is born for the day of adversity. That is a word in season. Living in a time which values the dollar bill and values the opinion of man for the survival and success in life. Having someone in your corner is a treasure. There are people who enlighten your life with laughter, love, wisdom, truth, concern, forgiveness, correction and just value. These are treasures that are not tangible but they are treasures to behold. The power of friendship is it can cover you, strengthen you, equip you, release you and bring you into a knowledge that can even save you. Friends are people who see your nakedness and speak to your successs in spite of it.

They embrace you when you're broken and speak words that mend emotional scars they don't even want others to see. They bless you with what sometimes sound like an offence when in reality it is a means to help save you from yourself. They want only the best for you and celebrate you when you've obtained it. They warn you of danger and help to steer you in the path that enlightens your life and not add strife and harm. Friends are live David and Johnathan they love and can love without barriers, positions or hiden agendas. They become your eyes and ears for you and tell you what they hear to help you walk in your freedom. They belong to a special group, no they are not angels, they simple walk in the midst of you with eyes that see and ears that hear and arms that catch. If you have a friend like this you are blessed. If you seek a friend like this. PRAY. Perhaps you may stumble in life into the life of someone else who asked for you and treasured you when you came into theirs.

Sis thanks for what you have said here. I was reading an article relating to how stay home moms (although I am not a SAHM) need connections and friendships with other moms to bring balance in their lives. I could seriously relate to that as well as your blog. I used to think when I was a bit younger and less wiser that I didn't need friends and that my sisters were too troublesome. I have since wised up and seek out wholesome friendships with other sisters that can add to me and "deposit" knowledge, truth, and wisdom in my life. Again Sister Vernell, thanks again for this wonderfully thoughtful blog post.

True friends are rare. We should treasure ones we find and give thanks for them when they come to us.

Thanks Jen for your heartfelt comments. I agree with you about growth. We learn tht sometimes the best of friends can be right in our midst. I think we can be so busy growing up as siblings that w can't see the potential around us of a great support system. Life has a way of maturing us to be wiser in our acceptance of others. It blesses us when we allow it to speak.

There is a saying by Oprah: "Sometimes You Have To Leave Home To Find Home". I am glad to have found it here. I am honored to have you all as my friends in unity.

Vernell, I love this blog. My best friend of 23 years is one of the great treasures in my life. She's not just my friend, but my SISTER. We met in church when she was 11 and I was 12. Our first children are 2 months apart. We were in the delivery room with each other! Yeah, it's that deep! God has been so good. Most of my friends growing up were guys. As an only girl with 3 brothers, me and guys have always had better friendships. She's the one true female friend of 5 years or more that I have and she is a God-send. Before I met my husband, my male best friend and I were that for 15 years. Of course, my husband is my best friend now but the former male title holder is still one of my closest friends...and my husband's cool with it because there's a solid history there. Plus, he has never (and dare I say, would never) disrespect our covenant. He and my husband haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet because we're in the NW and all our loved ones from my family are in the South. They've talked on the phone, but that's pretty much it. I don't talk to him as often as I used to, but matters not. Me, him and my homegirl are still a close knit family.

Great post. REALLY great post! Thanks!!!

-Blessings...

Thanks Dee, you too are blessed. To have a friendship and more than one is truly a blessing and to have one that withstood the highs and lows in your life shows you the value of that friendship. You are truly blessed.

My mom always taught me, "everyone is your friend until they teach you that they are not your friend". This is the way I take all people that I meet.

I must add how I also pay very close attention to those 'bells" going off and those "red" flags as they go off also.

I also never get tired of saynig how my best freind whose name is Minnie and I were born in June almost 67 years ago and we have been best friends for almost 67 years.(smile)
