Our research enterprise totals over $800 million a year. The Department of Environment, Health and Safety is recruiting for an Assistant Biological Safety Officer to serve as the initial reviewer of research proposals submitted to the Institutional Biosafety Committee and to conduct risk assessments of proposed research. We seek skilled, motivated, professional staff who understand the complexities of working in a research institution and who are committed to creating a safe environment for that work to occur. Qualifications / Requirements: Master's degree required, in biological sciences (e.g. microbiology or a related field) preferred. Experience including administrative and research responsibilities, preferably in a biological, medical, education or research setting. Proficiency with computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases required. Experience interacting with a wide range of clientele including scientists, administrators, regulators, students, and facilities personnel. Experience in regulatory affairs and compliance with federal regulations is highly desirable. A well qualified candidate will have: extensive knowledge of biological sciences demonstrating breadth and depth; experience in the conduct of biological research that utilizes hazardous materials and the practices and equipment used to mitigate the risks; detailed knowledge of regulations and standards that apply to laboratory safety, especially biological safety; ability to maintain a professional and service oriented relationship with customers and co-workers; effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to organize and present information in a logical manner.
