Five Golden Bulls Earn All-American Honors For Outdoor Track
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on June 08, 2009 FEATURED Content The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their 2009 Division II Outdoor Track and Field All-Americans and five Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls earned the honor. On the women's side, sophomore Nikki Boston, freshman Rosemarie Carty, sophomore Lakaevia Tyler, and sophomore Shermaine Williams received All-American honors for their performance this season in the 4x100 meter relay. The relay team placed sixth at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. The team achieved a season best time of 46.23 in the prelims and returned 46.43 in the final. Carty and Williams also earned All-American honors at the 100 meter event. Williams captured her third NCAA title in two years and came so close to establishing her third national record. Williams won with the fastest time ever recorded by a Division II sprint hurdler at the championship meet. Her time of 12.95 would have broken the existing record of 12.99, but a wind speed of 2.4 meters per second denied Williams the record; the allowable limit is 2.0. Carty, the only freshman JCSU All-American this season, placed second in the 100m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She achieved a personal best of 13.40 in her prelims and repeated the time in the final. Sophomore Leford Green was the only Golden Bull from the men's side to achieve All-American status this year. Green was awarded the honor for his performances in the 200m and 400m events. Green was responsible for every team point earned by JCSU at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championship (14 points). He placed second in the 200m (20.66, PB) and third in the 400m (46.26) to complete his third All-American performance in two years (2008 Indoor and Outdoor All-American). Green ends the season the top ranked 200m performer and the third ranked 400m performer in the nation. Williams and Carty will run in Jamaica's national trials for the Pan Am Junior Championships in Trinidad and Tobago in July. Green will compete for a spot on Jamaica's national team for the World Championships in Berlin in August.
