Posted By: MIISRAEL Bride on June 16, 2009 Associated Press: May 31, 2009 Alysa Stanton has become the first black woman to be ordained as a Rabbi. Stanton will be leading a predominately white congregation. Stanton commented in a recent news article that she began her spiritual search at the early age of 9 years old. Stanton stated: Her journey had many twists and turns along the way, but Judaism is the language of her soul, and it's what resonates with here. The 45 year old Rabbi congregation is in Greensboro, NC and consists of at least 60 families. Stanton is a graduate of Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, which is one of the oldest institutions for training rabbis. Once converting from Christianity, she said a lot of her Afro-American friends thought she had grown horns, but her mother wasn't surprised she decided to become a rabbi.
