WHY MY NEXT BOOK IDEA IS ABOUT RACIAL PROFILING!

WHY MY NEXT BOOK IDEA IS ABOUT RACIAL PROFILING!
Posted By: Bill Cooper on June 20, 2009

You have been following my experiences tracking down what at times puts one in the mindset of viewing the President's stimulus bill as one big escapade, a huge prank foisted on an unsuspecting, ill-informed American public. And just as I did during my federal career, let's set the record straight and that is what the aim of this blog is for Once people have the facts presented to them, opportunity can knock a little more convincingly. I have set it as my life's mission to present those opportunities, especially now with so many of our communities in such economic desperation. This would definitely be the case with struggling businesses and those hurt the most by a recession that in my view has a hammer like grip on our economy.

Dealing with many socio-political evils are not subjects I readily take on. But when it almost seems like the case has been specially reserved for you, you have to take a step back and ask, "Why is this situation being presented? And at this time? And who are these involved? Some of my audiences wanting to hear more on this arcane stimulus bill also bring me an assortment of other matters with which they think or feel I can be of assistance. Honestly, you cannot just make up what you are about to read next! Last time I checked, this was still the "GOOD OL' USA", am I right?

See what you think of this and let me know of other instances of racial profiling. Some of you became members of my group at www.hoodeconomix.com. The name of the group is, "PICTURE THIS! HAVE YOU EVER EXCLAIMED...."! And it has been some time since I have made another contribution to the story, which I can now say is basically true and I was the "victim" of domestic abuse as well as racial profiling at the hands of a Michigan city police force some years ago and in whichI was almost not found alive-Ireally was the guy barefooted in the muddy bog, nearly half frozen (body temperature of 86 degrees F when found by emergency personnel .

I invite all to give the story another read now that this scenario that follows makes excellent material for a book about profiling and somehow, call it fate or destiny, but the sequence of events I am about to relate are just that compelling to me. And I am going to make a request for suggestions from those who wish to help with tips, advice, urging whatever comes to mind to enable me to get some of these "BOOKS" that are in my head or computer keyboard into print book wise. I have an attorney friend who after reading some of my website entries, with her eyes misty as she pleads with me to get the book(s) completed.

So, I hope that if enough of you prompt me some of these books will finally get in a bookstore. I know some of the anecdotes I have will be quite entertaining as well as informational, historical reading. For instance, I related elsewhere that my uncle was Dr King's recording secretary when the Montgomery Improvement Association was formed to support the bus boycott. But my mother and Rosa Parks knew each other and literallyl,' lived a few streets over from each other on the city's west side. Ironically, Ms.

Parks was a seamstress and my mom was a laundress and had to stand on her feet while performing her duties as a presser in the hot and steamy work environment of a laundry for 8 hours or more per night while her children kept house. I was 9 years old and dad had to be away often to seek migrant work after he finished his pastoral duties on Sundays.

How we survived I do not know for there were so many odds against us and poor, black families in similar situations. But we were happy, filled with hope and ambition, striving to treat others equitably. The golden rule was our mantra and serves as the backdrop for this story that I now wish to share. Some of the particulars of this story I cannot disclose, because of legal considerations and permissions not yet tied down.

So now for the "Flashback! Can you picture this? You and your friends are just hanging out on a Sunday afternoon in two separate automobiles when both cars stop at a service station and these young men get out and begin to converse outside their
cars. Suddenly, from out of no where it seemed, police cruisers, flashing lights, sirens,badge-crested, blue uniformed policemen with guns drawn-an intimidating, wits draining spectacle begins to unfold for these surprised, shocked young black men!

"FREEZE"! ""DON'T "THINK ABOUT MOVING!" "HANDS BEHIND
YOUR BACKS"! Commands barked out as thunderous as a lion's roar. As ear-deafening as the blasts that could come from either of the pulled guns at the ready if a false move was made.

What was the crime? Just been misidentified as robbers with a gun, and had just robbed a fast food restaurant a little distance from where the heist had been pulled off.. A FELONY ONE COUNT!

Four young black men's lives on the verge of being ruined for the rest of their days. And after months of untold suffering and misery, nervous breakdown and other emotional and relationship woes, a jury of their peers acquits-ALL FOUR! aND IF YOU SAW THE MOVIE I HAVE WATCHED
scores of times, I have named this spectacle by the police, 'Shades of MY COUSIN VINNY"!

I think I was made for these kinds of cases, U.S. code, sec 1983ff case. You will be sure to follow this one. You see, the sesitivities, nuances presented with a subject of this nature require some pretty delicate handling because errors made were so glaring.

Needless to say, I have been tapped to assist in helping these young guys reclaim their lives. Any comments, arguments, discussions, a line similar to one in the movie...

Some of you may wonder out loud about speaking on behalf of others on legal matters. But recall I had almost 30 years of administering a law while with the Social Security Administration. And while I am not a licensed attorney, with my law schooling background coupled with my federal career I enjoy pursuing law which I have a passion for as a freelance paralegal of sorts-for the record.

Also remember, it is one's constitutional right to represent himself or others ( pro se basis), although I would recommend seeking advice of a licensed attorney for cases of the legal complexities described here.
