SUNO welcomes volleyball to athletics

Southern University at New Orleans has added women's volleyball to its athletics line-up. This is the first season for SUNO Volleyball which will be coached by Wendy Magee. This is Magee's first head coaching job.

"Our team motto is "Defy expectations'," says Magee. "As being named the head volleyball coach on the collegiate level is an honor and a privilege, 'Defy expectation' means to do the opposite of what everyone thinks.

I expect to win, and grow the team by using life lessons and surpassing all obstacles I might have while building a new team."

Magee, who is a graduate of Wiley College, has coached at Belle Chasse High School as an assistant. There, she helped the girls' volleyball team to a district championship in 2008.

The team's season will begin on August 29th with a trip to Marion, Alabama to take on Judson College. The Lady Knights will take the floor of the The Castle for their first home match on September 4th against GCAC rivals, Spring Hill College.

Other key match-ups include:
Sept. 8th vs. Loyola University (The Castle)
Oct. 2nd at Loyola University
Oct. 20th at Dillard University
Nov. 2nd vs. Dillard University (The Castle)

GEORGE JAMES
Senior Program Manager at Rosser International
Following hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, I coordinated the FEMA Educational Planning Team responsible for planning and constructing (with assistance from Army Corp of Engineers and National Guard) the temporary SUNO campus in approximately 90 days, and in time for 2nd semester opening. I am glad to see that things are getting back to normal and programs are expanding. I trust that you will have positive experiences with the new vollyball program.

Give my regards to Dr. Gerald Williams who was extremely instrumental in the campus rebuilding.
