Staying in College: Don't Get Caught up
|
Posted By: Neil Foote on August 18, 2009 In his latest book, "Tom Joyner Presesents: How to Prepare for College," Joyner and authors, Thomas and Wil LaVeist discuss how it's easy to get 'caught up' in the social scene. In this excerpt, here's some advice: The hard part of applying to and get ting into college may be over. But for some, the hardest part is completing college. One out of four freshmen drop out annually, according to American College Testing. Financial pressure is the main reason, but close behind is poor academic performance. This is often tied to students who are academically unprepared or, once they arrive on campus, they get caught up into having too much fun. In other words, it’s party time! Many say that the college years are the best of a person’s young life, but it’s also a time of intense transition to adult hood that can be extremely difficult to navigate. Students living on campus don’t have parents to rely on to tell them what to do and when to do it. Many schools won’t have a curfew so students can stay out as late as they want, and no one is going to make them do their homework, which may have been the case in high school. Dealing with new found freedom is a huge hurdle awaiting freshmen. It’s a time of freedom and independence, but with this freedom comes a lot of responsibility. Although students should make college fun, there should be a balance between work and play. Looking for more advice on how to stay in school?
