Learning To Let Go

Learning To Let Go
Posted By: Vernell Gore on August 28, 2009

In life we must learn to let go. There are people who come into our lives that influence our lives either for God or against the knowledge of God. There are experiences that can take us to our next level or level us in life. No matter how much we may love someone else that does not always mean that person is really to be a part of our destiny. Our life pattern, I believe is set by God and his thoughts toward us are reflective of his own nature. That should make it easier for us to let go of people that are not good for us but life is not always so simplistic. Wisdom, true wisdom leads you into a path of prosperity, never shallow, demeaning or diminishing the creative hand of God over your life or toward your future in life. One of the great lessons from the Bible is the story of King Jehoshaphat who had an “acquaintance” named King Ahab. King Ahab faced a battle that was his. He had enemies coming against him that he sought help in conquering. King Ahab approached King Jehoshaphat in order to succeed against his enemies. King Ahab had the reputation for being one who did not listen to the counsel or standard of God. He followed his own style of leadership and that was the pattern of his life as king. King Jehoshaphat was one known to have the favor of God on his life. King Jehoshaphat agreed to “assist” King Ahab in his battle and sought the counsel of the “prophets” to see if there was a word. The “prophets” of King Ahab prophesied triumph and success in the battle they saw victory and definite success. King Jehoshaphat was not satisfied (apparently his spirit did not rest) and he sought counsel from the prophets of Jehovah-God. King Jehoshaphat knew the difference between the prophets of King Ahab and the prophets of Jehovah. The prophets of Jehovah-God spoke what King Ahab wanted to hear, success but even King Ahab knew and compelled the “true” prophet to speak the truth. Then the prophet of Jehovah-God spoke defeat and failure. King Jehoshaphat nevertheless continued in the battle with King Ahab. King Ahab taking heed to the counsel of the “true” prophet did not go to the battle dressed in his kingly garment, as was the tradition of battles of war. He allowed though for King Jehoshaphat to dress in his. The idea to King Ahab was the enemy would pursue the one who looked like he was king.

The end result of this was the enemy of King Ahab began to pursue the wrong king. It was only after King Jehoshaphat cried out to Jehovah-God that he was saved. The point of this lesson is if King Jehoshaphat had left the battle to King Ahab and heeded the counsel of the Lord, he would not have been put in a position wherein his life was in jeopardy. King Jehoshaphat had given his word but there was a conflict between his word and God’s will. God’s will was not King Ahab being of success or he would have provided it. It was not God’s will for King Jehoshaphat to fight or his life would not have been pursued and he would have helped King Ahab win. Sometimes we must let go of people, places and things. Sometimes that can be vows we make to people, people we think we can “carry” with us into our future (friends, past lovers, etc) sometimes even family members (their ideas, opinions, views, concepts and even themselves). Sometimes we must let God speak even when we don’t want to hear it or it causes us to make a stand that others may question, judge or demean us for having. There are points to ponder in this lesson:

v Are you holding onto something God did not ordain?
v
v Are you still seeking counsel after your spirit has told you the answer?
v
v Are you walking in the path of someone else because you are his or her friend?
v
v Are you afraid to say no when yes could cost you your life or ministry?
v
v Are you sure the battle you are in is the Lord’s?

One decision made by a king with a “friend” almost cost him his life and kingdom. Look at the life of the nation King Jehoshaphat was over that could have been displaced by one decision. Look at the spirit in which the battle would have been won. Deception and trickery, sounds more like Satan than God’s way. Letting go in life many times challenge our comfort zone. Many times we become very uncomfortable with having to make a decision that may cause controversy but the effects of hesitation could result in loss or even death. What is the value of a friendship that rapes you of your future; that covenants with you but against you are the same time? Only you will really know the value of letting go as led by God. The thing about letting go for God is he remains faithful, will your Ahab?
