Tom Joyner Foundation Receives $10k Donation from Newell Rubbermaid for Clark Atlanta Scholars
|
Posted By: Neil Foote on October 19, 2009 The Tom Joyner Foundation® today announced it has received a $10,000 donation from Newell Rubbermaid through the company’s corporate philanthropy program, Investing in Community, to underwrite four scholarships for students at Clark Atlanta University. The Foundation will award a $2,500 scholarship to each of the four “Newell Rubbermaid Scholars” as part of a month-long fundraising campaign to benefit Clark Atlanta University, a historically black college and university. “This is a really good thing,” said Tom Joyner, whose nationally syndicated morning radio show airs in 115 markets reaching more than eight million listeners. “This comes at a time when many companies are cutting back what they can do for the community. Now, Newell Rubbermaid is helping these students complete their education.” Based in Atlanta, Newell Rubbermaid is a global marketer of consumer and commercial products with a strong portfolio of brands including Rubbermaid®, Sharpie®, Graco®, Calphalon®, Irwin® and Paper Mate®. “Newell Rubbermaid is pleased to support students attending historically black colleges and universities, especially here in our home city of Atlanta where our gift will fund scholarships for deserving students attending Clark Atlanta University,” said Jackie Parker, Vice President – Global Inclusion & Diversity and Corporate Philanthropy for Newell Rubbermaid. “Through our Investing in Community corporate philanthropy program, we have contributed to more than 100 nonprofit organizations during the past year and encouraged our employees to participate in numerous volunteer opportunities to help improve the communities where we live and work.” The students who will receive the scholarships based on their academic excellence and community involvement are: • Jessica Bailey, a senior from Hercules, Calif., majoring in psychology. • Terri Abney, a sophomore from Woodbridge, Va., majoring in theatre arts • Tanza Bibbs, a freshman from College Park, Ga., majoring in business administration • Latasha Cardwell from Easton, Pa., majoring in accounting. Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated 'Tom Joyner Morning Show', which reaches nearly eight million listeners in 115 markets each week, created the Foundation in 1998 to help keep students enrolled in Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs). The Foundation has raised more than $55 million in a decade for HBCUs and their students. The scholarships are awarded each week to students attending the Tom Joyner Foundation's "School of the Month" and are announced on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. For information about the scholarship programs, students should contact their school administrators. ### If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
