R. and First Aid Instructor, I feel this is a perfect opportunity to express how a poor health / diet is an Emergency. Prevention is our number one defense, against even having to deal with an Emergency. Since Sudden Illnesses and Accidents are the major causes for first aid emergency assistance, which both can be directly connected to some ones health and their diet, makes this an important Health Tip. Some of the major Health Emergency Related Conditions: (Each one of these situations can be altered by a change of diet and life style.) Heart Attacks Strokes Heat strokes Shock Food / Fish poisonings Fever Diabetic coma (hyperglycemic / hypoglycemic) Trouble breathing Asthma Allergic reactions Anaphylaxis Hyperthermia Cramps Abdominal cramps Vomiting blood Fainting Unconsciousness Seizures Choking ( gulping food, instead of chewing) Chronic Conditions (cancer illness) Alcoholism Drug over dose (prescription / illegal), etc. This is not to exclude: Severe headaches, Diarrhea, Constipation, Dizziness, Nausea, Medication side effects and a Sense of DOOM! Imagine the number of accidents that have a direct relationship to some ones Health. Not just car accidents, but falls, drownings, job related injures, etc. The second line of defense in an Emergency Preparedness; get some training. The rule in an Emergency situation is 3: You can survive 3 minutes without Air. (before brain and organ damage begins) You can survive 3 days without Water. You can survive 3 weeks without Food. That is why being trained, you will not hesitate or be afraid of doing, or not doing, the right thing. I am even a bigger advocate for all our school age children to be given First Aid Training for a number of good reasons: Children, in most cases, will be with a peer when there is an accident or an injury. Too often, children are left home with younger brothers, sisters, cousins and some babysit other children. Others are home alone with elders, some elders with chronic aliments. A well informed youth, who is made aware of the consequences for making bad decisions or reckless behavior, will must likely to think twice and to be more cautious. Another advantage for a teen to take first aid training, it makes them more eligible to work in after school / camp programs, around the water, and in the service industries. For the same reasons and even more so, adults should have the C. P. R. and First AID Training. Important steps to take when facing an Emergency: Check - The area for your own safety The victim for injury To see how many are injured To be able to pass on vital information to the emergency responders: who, what, where, when, how, etc.? Call - 911 to make that direct contact to the emergency responders. Care - The care will be based on your training and the needs of the victim. Note: When you are checking a victim, you: Look, Listen and Feel for their vital signs ( Signs of Life), which are their ABC’s ( Airway, Breathing and Circulation.) “Prevention is the Key to Safety and Well Being.” If more adults took better care and ate healthier they would not only feel better but they would also think and reason more clearly, there by preventing some and reducing Accidents and Sudden Illness Emergencies.
