Ignorant or what!?!?!

Posted By: Angela Gill on August 04, 2005

i was talking to my (white/hispanic) friend the other day and we were discussing which schools we wanted to apply to for college. I explained to him that I reaaaaallllllly wanted to go to an HBCU and major in Theatre Arts or even speech communications. He paused for a minute and then asked "BUT WHY?" I told him that i thought it would be a great experience, I would get to be surrounded by all my brothas and sistas....and that I've always wanted to attend an HBCU since i was in 2nd grade.

I remember picking up a pamphlet for Howard University and telling my mom "I WANNA GO HERE!" My friend didn't understand this, he replied to me by saying...."If i had to go to a school with a bunch of hispanics i would just shoot myself!" I was surprised that he could say something like that. Then he said " well angela, i don't think that going to a black school is a good idea because you'll only learn about black playwrights...and, you'll only perform things by black writers...and then you'll be type casted"....i told him that we would finish this conversation in person

Now, i need YOUR help....give me some things to say! ...... :)

Tell him that just because your want to go to a HBCU doesn't mean your just going to learn what black people do and think, its just heavily populated by blacks thats the only thing that different. If you go to a heavily white school does that mean your going to learn only what whites do? Going to a black school is about wanting to be around people of your own race, your there for an overall education. Tell him there is no race on education. You learn what you can by whom will teach you. There is other races at all black colleges its just populated by black people. Hope this helps

BEING AROUND YOUR BORTHAS AND SISTAHS IS WHAT YOU WANNA DO......DO IT. YOU SHOULDNT LET OTHER PEOPLE INFLUENCE YOU ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU WANT TO SUPPORT "US" BY ATTENDING AN HBCU...HBCU GIVES AS MUCH IF NOT MORE OPPORTUNITY AS ANY OTHER SCHOOL...FOLLOW YOUR HEART AND I WOULDNT EVEN FINISH THE CONVERSATION. GO PICK UP YOUR HOWARD APPLICATION.
