NFL News and Updates

The NFL has been buzzing since Friday as free agents move about the league signing with various teams. MKRob Sports has been up on all of it and here's a run down on all of the transactions.

Vikings Have Interest In Free Agent RB LaDainian Tomlinson

Although nothing is imminent, the Vikings appear to have a genuine interest in running back LaDainian Tomlinson. He would be a possible replacement for Chester Taylor, who left the Vikings after four seasons to sign with Chicago.

Tomlinson spent nine years with San Diego and was the NFL’s MVP in 2006, establishing single-season records with 31 touchdowns and 186 points. He also won the NFL rushing title that season and again in 2007. However, the 30-year-old was released last month after being slowed by injuries in recent seasons.

The fact Tomlinson remains on the market is evidence of the fact his best years are behind him. But he could play a valuable role as the backup to Adrian Peterson. Tomlinson would be expected to replace Taylor as the third-down back, although his blocking skills aren’t believed to be on par with Taylor’s.

The Cleveland Browns took the first steps in improving their quarterback situation by acquiring Seneca Wallace from the Seattle Seahawks via trade on Monday.

According to Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times the Seahawks will get an undisclosed 2011 draft pick in exchange for Wallace. The pick will likely depend on his play in Seattle.

The Browns are expected to release one of, if not both of, their current quarterbacks in Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.

Wallace was drafted by Browns president Mike Holmgren in 2003 while he was still in Seattle.

Antwaan Randle-El resigns with the Pittsburgh Steelers...RandleEl

I guess there's no place like home. Former Washington Redskins wide receiver Antwaan Randle El agreed to terms on a three-year deal on Monday night with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Randle El began his career with Pittsburgh, which was among the reasons he re-signed with them instead of continuing contract talks with several of the other teams that pursued him.

“It’s kind of like going home, yeah, that’s what it feels like,” Randle El said Monday night in a phone interview. “Going back to where I was drafted and where my roots started. I feel pretty good about the decision. Just want to go do some damage.”

In his first stint with the Steelers, Randle El was a major contributor and helped the team win a Super Bowl title. The eight-year veteran was a productive punt returner and No. 3 receiver for Pittsburgh, and the Steelers plan to primarily use him as the third receiver during the 2010 season.

“We’ve talked about just playing No. 3 receiver. That’s all we talked about,” Randle El said. “I’m not even sure about punt return, now that I think about it. The way I always look at it, I’m going to go in and be No. 3.

“But if the other guys go down, certainly, I’ll be the one to step in. I don’t think I’m going to be sitting on the sideline watching. That’s how I approach it.”

The Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots were among the teams that expressed interest in signing Randle El.

Eagles Vikings FootballEagles Resign Jason Avant to a 5-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles and wide receiver Jason Avant have agreed to terms on a five-year contract.

Avant, a restricted free agent, is coming off his best season in four years since the Eagles selected him with a fourth-round pick in 2006. He caught 41 passes for 587 yards with three touchdowns in 16 games, nine of which he started.

The 26-year-old Michigan product has 103 receptions for 1,299 yards with eight touchdowns in his career.

Chiefs Resign receiver Chris Chambers

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed wide receiver Chris Chambers to a three year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.ChrisChambers

The total value of the deal could reach $15 million and there are $5.9 million in guarantees, Schefter reports.

This is excellent news for the Chiefs. He was one of a handful of unrestricted free agents that the Chiefs let hit the market.

He was considered a priority in the offseason. He reportedly drew some interest from the Cincinnati Bengals but nothing much came of it.

Chambers was far and away the best deep threat on the Chiefs last season. In nine games, he amassed 608 yards and four touchdowns so this is a big bonus for Matt Cassel as well.

David Carr is a 49'er

DavidCarrThe Giants are officially in the market for a backup quarterback.

David Carr, who served as Eli Manning’s backup the last two seasons, has agreed to terms on a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers, according to his agent, Mike Sullivan. The terms of the deal were not immediately available, but Carr is expected to sign the contract tomorrow morning.

The 30-year-old, who was the top overall pick in the 2002 draft, also drew interest from Arizona and Cleveland. The Giants wanted him back too, but a source familiar with Carr’s thinking said he wanted to find a team that would give him a better shot at playing. And while 49ers coach Mike Singletary has committed to Alex Smith as his starting quarterback, clearly he’s on much shakier ground than Eli Manning is in New York.

Carr is also a native of Bakersfield, Calif., and had a desire to return to his home state.

Jim Sorgi being worked out by New York Giants

The backup for one Manning will now audition to be a reserve for another.Colts Sorgi Chance Football

Former Colts quarterback Jim Sorgi has scheduled a visit with the Giants Monday, according to someone informed of the meeting. The person requested anonymity because the team doesn’t comment on workouts.

The Giants are looking for a potential replacement for David Carr, who met with the 49ers this weekend and appeared headed to San Francisco Saturday. As of Sunday, there was no official word of a contract being finalized.

Sorgi, a sixth-round pick of the Colts in 2004, appeared in 16 games with Indianapolis over the past six seasons. He completed 99 of 156 passes for 929 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Last December, Sorgi was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, which allowed Curtis Painter to step in – to the delight of the Jets, of course.

Obviously, he made no starts, as Peyton Manning hasn’t missed a game since entering the NFL in 1998. Eli Manning also has an impressive consecutive games streak going, as he’s started all 97 regular-season games (plus seven postseason games) since taking over for Kurt Warner in 2004.

Eagles to Pick Up Michael Vick's Roster Bonus of 1.5 Million (What does that mean for the team?)

The Eagles have informed Michael Vick’s agent, Joel Segal, that they will pick up the QB’s 2010 roster bonus this week, according to a league source.

Vick is due a $1.5 million roster bonus by Wednesday.

The Eagles are carrying three quarterbacks who have started in the NFL — with success — but they haven’t attempted to trade any of them. Should a team offer value for Vick at some point — a pick in at least the second round — perhaps a deal could materialize. But a team source has continued to maintain that the Eagles have every expectation of Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Vick all being in training camp.
