How much and why to tip your hairstylist

How much and why to tip your hairstylist
Posted By: Erika Neal on April 02, 2010

Most everyone knows the tipping standard for food service is 15 to 20%. What standards apply in the hair salon?

Finding the ideal hairstylist can take years. Once you find yours, you will likely want to show your appreciation. Generally speaking, the tip should be at least 15%, if you are satisfied with the service and results. If you are thrilled, or if your stylist put extra time and effort into your appointment this time, then you way want to add 20% instead.

If a colorist assisted your regular hairstylist, then you can certainly split the tip between the two. (It may become necessary to round up the total a bit for split tips.)

If additional people helped you, such as a shampoo girl, then you will want to give her a small tip as well. A dollar or two are ample, except in high-end salons, where more may be expected.

Employees in tipping businesses often earn lower hourly wages than those in other situations. Tips become a large part of their income.

In particular, hairstylists often must purchase their own tools and supplies, so the extra money is essential to their business.

Ideally, customers will offer tips in cash. Many salons will accept checks or credit cards, and you can often add this to your total. In most cases, the receptionist will hand you the extra bills, so you can give them out personally. (If not, you will want to be specific, but polite, about how they are to be given out. If you are unsure, it may be worthwhile to linger a bit in the salon, so you can witness the actual distribution.)

Traditionally, people did not tip the owner of a beauty establishment. However, this trend is changing, and most owners do appreciate gratuities.

A courteous and generous customer will be welcomed back, offered excellent appointments, and treated with respect.
