Wow, Like a FOX: How The Media Can Influence
|
Posted By: Vinicent Holland on April 15, 2010 "David Frum, a prominent conservative pundit and former speechwriter for George W. Bush, led the charge last month when he lambasted Republicans’ handling of health-care reform. In a piece about the health-care vote titled “Waterloo,”Frum wrote, "We followed the most radical voices in the party and the movement, and they led us to abject and irreversible defeat. There were leaders who knew better, who would have liked to deal. But they were trapped. Conservative talkers on Fox and talk radio had whipped the Republican voting base into such a frenzy that deal-making was rendered impossible…By mobilizing them with hysterical accusations and pseudo-information, overheated talk has made it impossible for representatives to represent and elected leaders to lead." On Nightline, Frum noted, "Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us, and now we're discovering we work for Fox…The thing that sustains a strong Fox network is the thing that undermines a strong Republican Party." (courtesy of newseek: http://www.newsweek.com/id/236309) I don't really know what to say. No, just kidding. I kinda knew that something was going to be said by Repubs because the American people are more intelligent than the media wants to give them credit for. Sooner or later, people start to sit back and think through the things going on around them. They begin to use their own minds and look past the hype and hysteria that might be trying to affect certain people. What's that old saying? "You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time". And with elections bearing down on the mid-term election period, savy politicians are going to want to make sure they stand out as standing on their own merit and having their own mind. The last thing they are going to want is to look like pawns of some news media outlets. Of course, the news media is going to continue to use every avenue it can avail itself to. The desire to be out front leading the news media pack and of building a following of watchers and listeners definitely serves to at least help with revenues. Keeping people believing that all of the news they report is the truth and that they and only they have the inside track to "the real deal" can also allow media outlets to have their own agendas followed with very little notice from regular folks. They also know that a radical group exists on both sides of the political party spectrum and being able to reach that element in either group may be the best way to stay worth a damn. Then again, being able to reach people on the radical fringe of things also makes reporting stories and news not only profitable but popular. Having the ability to have people who are literally hinged on every word and ready to react to announcements, stories and reports gives media outlets the power to demand the advertising rates from advertisers who want to reach the demographic that has become involved with the stories and news reported. Being tied that closely with constituents doesn't always serve politicians well when it comes to election time. So, I'm not surprised to see that some Repubs are coming out and speaking up against FOX. I don't think the folks at FOX are too excited about it either and come to think about it, FOX probably expected to have some backlash once the hot topic was cooled off. So, Repubs, relax. Americans aren't dumb. If you were celebrating FOX's reporting of events and happenings and you had put your ass into bed with FOX, Americans won't forget. Be careful because Americans are more savy then some folks gice them credit for. Although there is that fringe element that I mentioned. They on the other hand tend to only believe what they want to believe as long as it serves their purpose. So for the Repubs coming out speaking up about FOX and other medias role, it ain't really gonna matter to the hardcore fringe element. They are gonna stick with the stories that allow them to achieve the agendas they really want to achieve. When you decide you're against something no matter what it is, well, ain't much anyone can do to prove otherwise to you now is there? Just musing you know.
