NAACP Issues National Statistics On State of the African-American Community

Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on June 13, 2010 For all those who believe that "we have arrived as a community"', I invite you to view these statistics published by the NAACP recently: School districts with largely minority student populations receive $1000 less funding per pupil per year; 78% of the teachers who work in largely minority school districts teach subjects other than those in which they were certified; More than 52% of of minorities have no health care coverage; More than 25% of minorities live below the poverty level; Black women account for 69% of all new cases of HIV/Aids, blacks as a group account for 50% of all new HIV/Aids cases; Median Net worth: Whites - $81,000; African-American s- $10,000; Hispanics - 3,000 Once arrested, minorities are 3 times more likely to be incarcerated than whites Devastating statistics, right? So, now what? What do you think we as a community should do to begin to erase the trends outlined above? Its our turn to start carrying the torch that was entrusted to us by Martin, Malcolm, Thurgood, Eldridge, Rosa and all the rest.
