Should Rap Music with violent lyrics be banned?
|
Posted By: Hodari Brown on August 15, 2005 Rap music can be considered a style of art, and a way for the artists to express feelings through their words on paper. However, there are quite a few rap artists that get criticized for their lyrics. People shouldn?t censor the music just because of violent, vulgar and abusive messages it promotes to the world. Rap has been called one of the most important music forces to emerge in two decades. Its pounding beats and staccato rhymes exploded on the streets of the urban America in the early 1980s and since have become the theme music and lyrical heart of the vibrant youth culture called hip-hop. Hip Hop means the whole culture of the movement. When you talk about rap?Rap is part of the hip hop culture. The emceeing? The djing is part of the hip hop culture. The dressing & the languages are all part of the hip hop culture. The break dancing the b-boys, b-girls ...how you act, walk, look, talk are all part of hip hop culture... and the music is colorless. Hip Hop music is made from Black, brown, yellow, red, white? whatever music that gives you the grunt? that funk? that groove or that beat?is hip-hop. Rapping can be seen as one of the four elements of hip hop: MCing (rapping), DJing (mixing, cutting and scratching), graffiti, and break dancing. There are many different types of rap artist. There are some that talk about money, some talk about righteousness, and the list goes on and on. Every rap artist has their own way of expressing themselves. There are those that talk about sex, drugs, and violence who receive the negative attention. People, think this so- called gangster rap is a bad influence on children in the world and that it promotes violence and is also abusive to women. In the mid-1980s, rap became increasingly politicized, through the works of Public Enemy, KRS One, and others because it tended to chronicle the black urban experience. That type of rapping gave birth to the origin of Gangster rap, which may be seen in this context of subversion but is also seen by some as the abandonment of a constructive message. Gangster rap is a genre of hip hop, often with lyrical subjects based on the violence and misogyny inherent in the gangster lifestyle. This subject matter has caused a great deal of controversy, with many observers criticizing the genre for the perceived messages it espouses, including homophobia, misogyny, racism and materialism. Gangster rappers generally defend themselves by pointing out that they are describing the reality of inner-city ghetto life. Given that the audience for gangster rap has become overwhelmingly white, some commentators have even criticized as analogous to minstrel shows and blackface performance, in which African-Americans or whites made to look like a black caricature, acted in a stereotypically uncultured and ignorant manner for the entertainment of white audiences. Therefore, rap music with violent lyrics is simply a freedom of expression that addresses the strife?s of black America.
