Money Ball: The Business Side Of HBCU Sports

Money Ball: The Business Side Of HBCU Sports

From time to time HBCUSportsOnline will take a hard look at the "dollars and sense" of black college sports. We will interview administrators, review marketing strategies and analyze the numbers. This week, guest writer Francis Niles takes a hard look at the profit and loses at MEAC and SWAC member institutions as well as other FCS schools.

By Francis Niles

This Legacy Bowl "speculation", whether true or not, inspired me to begin preliminary research on school athletic budgets and programs. I have been posting information here and there and the information has been rather interesting indeed.

I figured it is time to just simply gather everything in one post so that others may find it and use it for their own information. Please, click the links, read the information, ask questions and demand answers from your schools. I also hope this inspires more people to actually get out there and not just donate $$$ but try an understand that helping out their universities is in the benefit of everyone.

The information from this research is from the 2008/2009 fiscal school year from http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/index.aspx.

First, look at the expenses and revenues for each MEAC team specific to the football portion of the athletic budget. I didn't include WSSU in this because they aren't in the MEAC anymore. I did include North Carolina Central and Savannah State because they are in the process of becoming full members of the MEAC in 2011.

Bethune-Cookman Univ.
Revenue - $3,071,002
Expenses - $3,071,002

Delaware State
Revenue - $3,537,133
Expenses - $3,258,427

Florida A&M

Expenses – $2,531,723

Howard

Expenses – $2,427,134

Morgan State

Expenses – $2,059,489

Norfolk State
Revenue – $2,458,242
Expenses – $2,073,504

North Carolina A&T
Revenue – $1,953,428
Expenses – $1,953,428

North Carolina Central
Revenue – $1,641,014
Expenses – $1,632,364

Savannah State
Revenue – $995,770
Expenses – $1,010,499
