The Purple Martins Visit Richmond, VA

The Purple Martins Visit Richmond, VA
Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on August 28, 2010

Each year, and no one knows for exactly how many, a little tiny bird, known as The Purple Martin, has come to Richmond, VA with thousands of its friends to hang out and roost in some trees along 18th and Franklin Sts. behind the Farmer's Market. What's so interesting about that you may say? Just this my friend. The martins are the largest species of swallow and migrate from Canada to Brazil each year for the winter. That's an approximate 5,000 mile journey.

For some reason, during the migration, they stop over in Richmond and hang out about 3-4 week before continuing their journey southward - way south. Every night, the birds put on an aerial display that is completely mind blowing. They flutter this way and that in a swarm hundreds of feet above the ground. Then seemingly on cue, they swoop down to the pear trees where they roost for the night. No verbal description can describe the awesomeness of their display. Perhaps the following photos will give you some idea of what I mean. Enjoy and Peace. PS - More photo are posted on my website: http://www.rudolphhickmanphotography.smugm...
