Lady Knights of Southern University at New Orleans earn first conference win in program history

Lady Knights of Southern University at New Orleans earn first conference win in program history
Posted By: Eddie Francis on September 10, 2010

In their first-ever meeting with crosstown rivals, Xavier University of Louisiana, the SUNO Lady Knights also earned their first-ever Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory. It is also the second win for the University's volleyball program. SUNO topped Xavier 3-2 in an exciting come-from-behind win.

In their inaugural season, SUNO Volleyball struggled through a 1-18 season. It was not until October of 2009 that SUNO registered their first win in program history with a win over Judson College (Alabama). The Lady Knights have begun their 2010 campaign with a 1-1 record, losing their first match to the NCAA's University of New Orleans. SUNO's GCAC rivals include Xavier, Dillard University, and Tougaloo College in the NAIA.

The Gold Nuggets started the match with two 25-22 set wins. Not to be denied, the Lady Knights played an aggressive third set to surprise Xavier with a 25-13 win. The resilient Lady Knights took the fourth set 25-22, and eventually sealed the match victory with a 15-11 fifth set win.

It is the first victory for Naomi Washington as a head coach. "We just played with consistency," said Washington of her team's win. "The team talked (on the court) the whole time; and when a team continues to communicate, it takes the other team out of their game. It let's (the opponent) know that (the match) isn't over."

Having started her head coaching career only days before her first match, Washington brings a tradition of winning. She enjoyed a productive career at California State University, Long Beach as a member of the 49er women's volleyball team, a perennial powerhouse in NCAA women's volleyball. Washington left Long Beach State as a two-time AVCA All-American. Most recently, Washington began her professional volleyball career as a member of Cala de Finestrat in Spain; and she also plays for USA Volleyball. Coach Washington graduated from Long Beach State with a bachelor's degree in Interpersonal & Organizational Communications with a minor in Africana Studies.
