PVAMU Hosts 40th Annual Career Fair

PVAMU Hosts 40th Annual Career Fair

Prairie View A&M Career Fair set for September 20-24

On September 20-24, Prairie View A&M University will focus on Career Emphasis. Part of the week’s events is the celebration of the 40th Anniversary Fall Career Fair with special events scheduled to involve employers from corporations, government agencies, graduate schools and non-profit organizations that will be on campus to recruit the students.

Events leading up to the career fair include a Golf Tournament on September 20, followed by a Special Luncheon honoring students and employers. Also on September 20 at 7:00 p.m. is the Career Honor’s Banquet Celebration with special recognition to former directors, employer companies, the Cluster Companies of the year and students. On September 22, the department will host a Corporate Gathering with employers and the college deans and department heads at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Houston.

The All Majors and Technical Job Fairs are set for September 22 and 23, respectively, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily in the Willie A. Tempton Memorial Student Center. The Career Fair is an opportunity for the students to meet with corporate recruiters and to secure full-time, part-time, and internship positions. Some of the participating companies include Boeing, Enterprise, Raytheon, Shell, Lockheed-Martin, Lone Star College, Medtronic System, General Electric, KBR, Enterprise Products, US Coast Guards, several USDA Departments, University of Arkansas, Texas A&M University, Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Instrument, Walgreens and Valero.

The increased use of the internet to pre-screen candidates for employment has led many companies to scale back in their recruitment levels and participation in career fairs. However, the competition for qualified candidates to fill professional vacancies and the need to build a diverse work-force are reasons why the companies continue to participate in programs that have yielded past success. “Prairie View A&M University continues to be the ‘campus of choice’ for these companies,” says Glenda Jones, Director for Career Services.

Under the theme: “Success without Limits,” the Career Center is poised to make a difference in the lives of the students with several pre-career fair activities to engage the students. According to Glenda Jones, Director for Career Services, “It is important that we help our students to make the right connections as they prepare for their futures. Students will have the opportunity to participate in seminars of resume and letter writing, interviewing, dress for success, and networking to help prepare for the career fair.

The Career Center continues to host a series of professional development seminars to assist the students in preparing for the corporate campus interviews to include interviewing techniques, salary negotiations and corporate etiquette, etc. The events are open to students and alumni who are encouraged to register with Career Services in order to avail themselves of the services.
