Tom Joyner Launches Major New Online Black College Education Initiative

Posted By: Neil Foote on September 15, 2010 Tom Joyner, the nationally syndicated media personality, is launching a major new initiative to showcase more than 25 online degree programs at some of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Tom Joyner Online Education, known as HBCUsOnline, will function as a marketing vehicle to encourage students to apply to Hampton University, the 142-year-old internationally renowned university based in Hampton, VA offering more than 22 online courses. The other participating HBCU at launch is Texas Southern University, whose president is Dr. John M. Rudley. It’s an 85-year-old institution best known for its Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Jesse H. Jones School of Business, its Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, and its College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, which has produced 27 percent of all African-American pharmacists in the country. Today’s launch sets the stage for a series of announcements in the months ahead, including other HBCUs and additional courses and programs to create the most comprehensive educational services company for black colleges in the world. “Everyone knows I’m passionate about my HBCUs and I’m working hard to find ways for my beloved Black Colleges to survive well into – and beyond - the 21st Century,” said Tom Joyner, whose leading nationally syndicated radio show is aired in 115 markets reaching more than 8 million listeners every week. “HBCUsOnline is my way of staying current and relevant. HBCUsOnline is offering a convenient, easy –to-use way for students to complete their undergraduate degrees or better yet, get a graduate degree. We’re going treat every student as if they’re on an HBCU campus. They’ll be part of community that will be with them from registration to graduation!” Hampton’s partnership with HBCUsOnline builds off a longstanding relationship that the university has had with Joyner. Dr. William R. Harvey, who is one of the longest sitting presidents at an HBCU, recently was appointed to President Barack Obama’s Board of Advisors for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Hampton is leveraging its rich tradition and legacy in the increasingly popular world of online education. Here’s how HBCUsOnline works. Students must apply to those participating universities, and once accepted, take classes taught by the schools’ faculty. Upon completion of all the required coursework, students will receive a degree from the participating universities - an accredited, credible, high quality and nationally recognized black college or university. As one of its distinctive programs, HBCUsOnline is offering “Student Support Plus”, a hands-on service providing students individualized assistance from registration to graduation. Student Support Plus seeks to create online the same nurturing learning environment for which HBCUs have known. Additionally, the online education environment will offer a wide range of courses that will be part of a rich, nurturing online community where students will have access to advisers to help them successfully complete their coursework. Joyner will continue to operate the 12-year-old Tom Joyner Foundation, which has raised more than $60 million to help student remain enrolled in HBCUs. The Foundation is aggressively working on developing new scholarships and diversifying its funding. For more information and to register, go to http://hbcusonline.com.
