|
Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on November 21, 2010 The late Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. was honored yesterday when the Navy commissioned The USS Samuel Gavely - DDG 107, into service in Wilmington, NC. Gravely, a Virginia Union University grad, served in the Navy for 35 years during which time he tallied a number of 'firsts' for a person of African-American descent. Among those firsts was that Vice Admiral Gravely was the first African-American to command a battleship during combat. In death, Gravely's legacy of firsts continues as this was the first time in navy history that a battleship was named for a person of African-American descent.
