HBO Real Sports Documentary on Hazing in HBCU Bands...

Posted By: Christopher Posey on December 01, 2010 FEATURED Content I sat in utter astonishment watching the HBO Special whereby they put on display the barbaric behaviors of our young adult students, including the ignorant condoning by HBCU officials. Slavery has left a lifelong scar on black people in the country so deep that now we publically acknowledge and morally allow students to be beaten into acceptance for the mere chance to "perform" at a goddamn football game halftime show! Then, most HBCU games as was admitted repeatedly in the documentary, we further condone this behavior by openly admitting that we do NOT go for the athletics and the youth who work tirelessly to hone their skills on the grid iron, rather we go to watch young ladies and young men gyrate in a perverted manner to the sounds and beats of some familiar tune! Wow! Really? Is this what we have come to? No wonder HBCUs DO NOT and WILL NOT ever get the level of respect and financial support that their white counterparts receive. This is deplorable behavior on all fronts! How can administrators sit quietly by and condone these types of behaviors? All in the name of saying, "well, my school is known for its band and we jam at our classic half time show..." or is it all in the name of keeping a paycheck at the price of the belittling, badgering and beating young minds into submission? Why not just have "massa" and the klu klux klan teach a class on campus and give credit for it, "how to beat niggas into submission 101?" To hell with "tradition" and the loyalty of the colors! I wish a low life, piece of crap, slave mentality nigger would put his or her hands on my son or daughter, it would be the very last time! Furthermore, I will NEVER support another classic football game and will do everything in my power to have them banned from cities all across the country by writing congressman, local politicians and others who will join me and expose them to the documentary and these kinds of behaviors. We have the audacity to lock up Michael Vick for beating and fighting a "dog," yet we condone this kind of behavior on campuses where young, impressionable minds are suppose tobe taught and learned how to be responsible young men and women? Give me a freaking break!! What lesson are we to take from this; that a dog's (a dog now!) life is more valuable than that of a young black male or female? Really? Some black people will forever succumb to the old addage of, "what do you call a black person with a degree? A nigger. It is the mentality of a home grown, slave "nigger" that would even tolerate, participate or accentuate this kind of behavior. Spike Lee needs to ring the alarm clock again as he did in the movie School Daze because some of us continue to live and perptrate the nightmare that Dr. King hoped would only be a dream.......Wake up black people!! Where is the NAACP, Urban League, National Action Network and all the other black activists groups. It is high time that we start policing ourselves. The hypocrisy of it all......we get all up in arms when white police officers beat, mangle, show excessive force toward our youth, but we stand for 15 minutes and applaud at halftime these behaviors - all the while knowing what is going on?! Negro Please!! I am almost compelled to not even allow such an excuse as slavery to take the fall for such deviant and demonizing behavior. It almost stinks of an aroma of pure ignorance that has stymied our progress mentally, socially, emotionally and spiritually. This behavior has to stop!! Demoralizing people is ridiculous. We get enough of that in everyday life. If a person is talented enough to go through an audition and is chosen,and is awarded a scholarship and accepted to the school, why in the world do you need to beat them, and degrade them. We continue to pull each othr down. We as a people are pathetic!!!!! plain and simple

I never unserstood the process of hazing to build a sense of brotherhood or sisterhoold in sororities or fraternities. It has the opposite effect; it builds animosity towards those who brutilized their pledges. I know that hazing is supposed to have been outlawed by these organizations but there is, now, underground hazing. I watched that episode of "Real Sports". The administrators would not go on camera and discuss what they would do to stop this hazing. They issued a written statement instead. For me that says it all. They aren't going to do anything. The percentage of acceptance of a WRONG, act, deed, or institution, can never make them RIGHT. Injustice of any sort, never really needs a reason, no matter how many are proffered.

Idk about 'banning the bands' ... I don't think people with musical ability should be denied the right to display their talents... Plus a lot of people in the bands get scholarships that allow for them to get education on other matters... But this is a very well written article... Call me naive but I had no idea hazing was present when it came to bands... People who haze are shameful, but the people who allow themselves to be hazed are even more shameful...
