Rust wins second straight over Hendrix

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on January 05, 2011 Rust College and Hendrix College’s men battled through 11 lead changes and seven ties in a nip and tuck contest in Conway, AR. on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Marcus Erves scored 16 points and denied three shots, while junior Jahrell Holmes grabbed a team high11 rebounds, blocked a shot, and made two steals to lead the Bearcats to a 68-64 victory. Rust opened the game with a cold hand, while three of Hendrix players each knocked down a 3-pointer in the first three minutes of the contest. Neither team stretched its lead past seven points the entire game and Rust trailed for the last six minutes of the first half, eventually Hendrix took a 35-30 advantage into the break. The Bearcats woes continued falling behind into the first 10 minutes of the second half. The lead changed hands five times in the last 10 minutes of the second half. Junior William Montgomery knocked down the go-ahead jumper with 2:53 remaining. Rust won the battle in the paint by out rebounding Hendrix 43-22. The Bearcats scored 14 points off the Warriors’ 11 turnovers. The Rust bench also scored 21 points and the Bearcats tallied 15 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds. Montgomery led the Bearcats with six assets and added eight points on 3-of-6 shooting. Junior Contreas Thomas was second in scoring with 9 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Rust was red hot from the free throw line during the first half, making 6-of-8 shots at 75%. More impressive was the Bearcats field goal percentage at 64%, making 16-of-25 shots during the second half. Rust completed the season sweep of Hendrix after a 82-69 win on Nov. 30. The Bearcats jump to 8-5 on the year and will look to continue their winning ways when the team travels to LaGrange College on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 4 p.m. CST.
