Lady Knights reach 11-0 for the first time since 2000
Posted By: Eddie Francis on January 05, 2011

Going into their January 10th contest versus Spring Hill College, the Lady Knights of Southern University at New Orleans are looking to top their season-beginning win streak from 2000. With a 66-58 victory over St. Thomas University (Fla.) in December, the Lady Knights started the season 11-0 to tie their 2000 start. It was that season that they were the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference co-champions.

SUNO's success is defined by defense. Senior forward LaTiondra Smith leads the conference in steals with 4.2 per game and also in blocks with 1.9 per game. Smith also ranks 2nd in the NAIA in steals per game, 13th in total steals (42), fourteenth in blocks per game, and 24th in blocks per game. Christine Conner, a transfer from Delgado Community College, ranks 38th in the NAIA in field goal percentage (0.484), 43rd in total rebounds per game (8.000), and 49th in offensive rebounds per game (3.182). Freshman point guard Lydia Ross has not only dazzled SUNO fans with her ball-handling skills but she has also provided defense ranking 9th in the NAIA in steals per game (3.545) and 23rd in total steals (39).

The Lady Knights rank in the top ten in the NAIA in eight categories:
* 1st in scoring defense per game (47.000)
* 2nd in steals per game (21.818)
* 2nd in scoring margin (33.636)
* 2nd in turnover margin (12.182)
* 2nd in 3-point field goal percentage defense (0.197)
* 2nd in field goal percentage defense (0.304)
* 2nd in total steals (240)
* 7th in scoring offense per game (80.636)

"Our plan is simple. We run and defend," says head coach and SUNO's athletic director, Elston King. "This is a very talented group, but we're undersized. So I encourage the girls to be aggressive but disciplined. We're blessed to be as successful as we are, but we still have a serious conference schedule." King's career coaching record, including this season, is 189-135.

Other NAIA team rankings:
* 24th in blocks per Game (3.636)
* 27th in offensive rebounds per game (15.455)
* 30th in total rebound margin (5.545)
* 34th in total rebound defense (35.545)
* 36th in total blocks (40)
* 36th in field goal percentage (0.425)
* 40th in assist/turnover ratio (0.768)
* 41st in total rebounds per game (41.091)
* 44th in assists per game (14.182)
* 44th in 3-Point field goal percentage (0.328)
