The Black Scholars Index Week in Review: January 8, 2011

The Black Scholars Index Week in Review: January 8, 2011
Posted By: Leshell Hatley on January 08, 2011

Greeting Scholars!

Happy New Year! We are back!

We hope you are engaged in, excited about, and thankful for a new year!

Where We've Been
As we embark on our 3rd year of existence (yup, we've been around for almost 3 years now), we will spend the first part of 2011 redefining and reinventing ourselves. All of this in response to your interest and support. BSI started in 2008 with a pilot survey of the landscape of Black Scholars around the country. We featured our findings in a research competition (we placed 3rd) and during the 2009 Digital Humanities conference (both at the University of Maryland). We received an overwhelming response to the attention we paid to Black Scholars and this prompted us to change our format to the format you see now (daily (M-F) features of Black Scholars from around the Diaspora). In 2009 & 2010, we've had to upgrade our servers more than four times in response to the number of hits the site received. We hope this growth continues in 2011.

Where We're Going
During this time, we've heard your feedback and as we work to reinvent a few aspects of BSI, we will change our feature structure for the next several months to one feature a week. Many of you have shared with us that features come and go so fast, that you barely have time to really learn about each one. So, we are going to feature one Black Scholar per week. Instead of featuring a HBCU President every Tuesday (the 2nd day of the week), we will feature a HBCU President the 2nd week of every month. We will try this for a while and see how it goes. Please continue sharing your feedback and we'll make all necessary changes in response to them - even if it means you all prefer us to go back to our daily feature format. We will begin this new structure next week.

You may also find us testing new layouts and site features for better navigation and discovery of the amazing scholarship represented throughout the site.

Over 250 Features
To date, with over 250 features, we've focused mostly on the US, but our plan for the coming years is to expand our reach and our methods of delivery. You'll hear more about this during the 2nd & 3rd quarters of this year.

Discussion of the Week
This week, we started testing 'Discussion of the Week' on our Facebook Page.

This week's discussion was entitled:
Why are STEM Chairs at HBCUs mostly Asian or Indian?

Check out some interesting responses here - http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=4502...

Please stay tuned to hear, see, and experience more to come in 2011!

Thanks for your continued interest and support!

...So, without further delay, please enjoy a recap of activities this past week below.
