Lady Knights hold off University of New Orleans to reach 13-0

Posted By: Eddie Francis on January 14, 2011 New Orleans, La. - The Lady Knights came out tight against the University of New Orleans Lady Privateers, but the nerves went away in the second half. Smelling their first 13-0 start in history, SUNO got their wish with a 72-63 victory over UNO in the Lakefront Arena on Thursday night. The Lady Knights, who received 26 votes for the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, are one of only three unbeaten teams in Division I. It was a tight contest throughout the first half with UNO taking the lead 13-12 with under 12 minutes left, but SUNO would later tie the game at 17 with 9:48 left. Veronica Azubuike provided a spark for the Lady Knights off the bench to help give SUNO a 25-23 lead with just over 7 minutes in the first half, but UNO would tie the game 27-27 with over 5 minutes left. Leading 35-31 at halftime, the Lady Knights came out with much more energy and intensity in the second half, taking a 40-35 lead to get it kicked off. Making her third 3-pointer of the contest, Kelly Stewart helped SUNO to a 46-41 lead, and would later lead the Lady Knights expand their lead when her lay up produced a 50-42 advantage with just over 13 minutes left. SUNO would later pull away when they took at 60-48 lead with just over 7 minutes left, but allowed UNO to get within 4 (64-60) with 2:03 left in the game. With 25.8 seconds left, however, SUNO would seal the win with a 69-60 lead. Stewart led SUNO with 20 points and 4 assists while Azubuike had 12 points. LaTiondra Smith led with 5 steals on the evening. SUNO's bench outscored UNO's 41-12. The Lady Privateers were led by Dinnelle Cormier in scoring with 22 points. Mirjam Sipos had a double double on the evening with 12 points and 13 assists. Sipos also led UNO with 7 steals.
