Shouild you buy an iPad or Motorolla Xoom - Blacks and Technology

Posted By: William (Bill) McGee on January 18, 2011

The iPad has taken the world by storm and opened up a whole new experience in mobile computing around the world. Yes, in many ways it is the equivalent of a big iPhone which also changed the game for cell phones. If you've thought about buying an iPad I have two suggestions. 1. If you're an Apple computer owner; buy the iPad. 2. If you're a PC person wait until spring 2011 and check out the Motorolla XOOM - A You Tube video is attached but you can Google it and find many videos. I own the iPad 64 GiG Wifi+3G and it is amazing. I'm typing this article on it with my laptop closed beneath. However, I will also probably find a reason to buy a XOOM too, if nothing else because I am a PC person at heart. I'll use the lack of FLASH on the iPad and Steve Jobs illness to justify the purchase with the Mrs..
Initally I got a lot of flack about my iPad because printing was difficult if not impossible, it also didn't multitask. When IOS 4.1 became available the game changed. I have very few issuses prinitng now and the multitasking is functional. Moreover, I can email all documents to the receipient and to myself for printing later. With the Xoom you won't have that problem and FLASH video will be the same as on your desktop. Xoom will be running Honey Comb Google's from the ground up tablet OS. Knowing how competitve the APP market it is between Apple & Droid any APP you need will be available on the Xoom. In addition, the Xoom has an SD Slot and HDMI.. those two items alone will make it very competitive. The Xoom won the overall Best in Show at the 2011 CES Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.
Let me say to all of you who are hesitating on needing any PAD or Tablet..

YOU DO!
I don't have enough room here to tell you all the reasons why, however, I'll give you a few. I can read any book, take several bibles to church, watch movies, txt msg, talk on the phone, write articles and papers, use it on the job to evaluate employees, research, play games, check the weather, read the news, and watch Cable TV. Yes, with the Slingbox app and a Slingbox, I can watch anything on my iPad that I can watch on my home TV. I take my iPad everywhere, it may not eliminate the need for a home computer for most. But it will help eliminate the old Desktop computer in the next few years. I forsee most people having a powerful Laptop at home and a pad/tablet for mobility computing. The truth is many people will no longer need cell phones as the tablet/pad become more common. I use a bluetooth headset with my iPad for music and other communication. There are several phone apps for the iPad (I use Line2) A Xoom being a motorolla product will have phone capabilities built in.
In closing, I advise my brothers and sisters (especially those 45 and older) to get on the band wagon. Technology is moving at an exponential pace and we need to adopt and use it vigorously. We also need to take advantage of opportunities for developing APPS that serve the HBCU market and graduates, along with the broader world market. A well designed App, with excellent graphics and purpose could make you a millionaire in a short period of time. Apple takes 30% and the developer keeps 70% of the revenue from app sales. I'm not sure what the percentage deal is for the DROID Marketplace but it's sure to be competitive. So, let's embrace this innovation in technology and leverage it in as many ways as possible. - Bill McGee (Techno Man)
