The Real World... Now What?

The Real World... Now What?
Posted By: Kenneth Watson on January 27, 2011

Since we were young, we have been programmed to believe that “If you go to college, you will get a job.” While this is true, our advisors, parents and mentors have failed to illustrate the importance of the time, patience and persistence it takes to find one. While graduating is hard, it is even harder finding a job to recoup your most extensive and expensive investment to date, your education.

Your mentors tell you to put together a resume and go after the jobs, so you look on numerous web pages for tips and samples. Then use your Microsoft templates and put together what you think would be a pretty darn good resume. You apply to job after job and still no replies. Not even an email stating that they have found an applicant for the job already! I know I began to blame the recession, but could not quite figure out why these organizations were posting jobs if they were not hiring anyone.

The fact of the matter is that they were hiring people. Even through these times of economic woes people are continually finding not just jobs, but beginning their career.

After receiving a small internship across the country from home, it slowly began to make sense to me. I had all the qualities that employers wanted, but I was just highlighting them on my resume. How was I suppose to now about personal branding, executive presence and a value proposition. I noticed that I was marketing myself as a college graduate and not a young professional who recently graduated from college seeking to begin his career.

Can you note the difference just in that description? I was the same product, just different, more attractive packaging. Once I began to look at myself as a product, it began to open my paradigm and access many career options and the same can happen for you.

That is what the “Now What?” series helps the viewer achieve. With the help of these eLearning workshops, you will be well on your way to building the career of your dreams.
