Tim and Daphne Reid joined Richard (Shaft) Roundtree debut film
|
Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on March 06, 2011 Last night, Richmond moviegoers were treated to a guided tour through African-American life in the deep south. It was the time before black pride and civil rights. A time when cotton and segregation were kings. Yet, somehow, one little colored boy flourished and thrived in the often hostile environment in the black neighborhood of Glen Allan, Mississippi. How? As our wonderful tour guides, Tim Reid, wife, Daphne Maxwell Reid, and renown actor and black film icon, Richard (Shaft) Roundtree, explained, in discussing their collaboration on the film, Once Upon A Time When We Were Colored, the equalizing and compelling factor that nurtured and propelled the little boy from being simply the illegitimate offspring of sharecroppers to college graduate was - in a word family. With its vibrant ensemble cast which included such notables as Al Freeman, Jr. (Malcolm X), Tony Award winning actor Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show), Leon (The Five Heartsbeats), Isaac Hayes (Black Moses), Bernie Casey (pro footballer and actor) and many others the film demonstrates in poignant detail the socio-economic struggle of a family determined to live by a set of standards that valued family, decency and faith. In many ways, it serves as a primer for living in a highly technical society that sometimes glorifies results over personal values and morale standards. During the post-film discussion, Tim Reid, the film’s producer spoke of the challenges of getting films like this one made in the land of La La (that’s Hollywood, y’all). The most recurring criticism Reid said he encountered in trying to get the film made was the belief that the storyline was “soft”. Soft, meaning, it was not believed that a film that did not make ample use of profane language and the seamier aspects of African-American life would/could be a box office success. Despite this assessment, Reid persevered and finally found two investors who were willing to fund the project. Thus, this absolutely worthwhile film came into being and was able to viewed to the delight and the standing ovation by movie goers assembled at VMFA on this evening in March.
