Posted By: Hija Chang on March 12, 2011 By: Dyson Show Staff A Coppin State University player gets hyped at a MEAC tournament game In January of this year, the Rev. D.Z. Cofield was installed as president of the Houston Branch of the NAACP. He hit the ground running and immediately weighed in on last year’s police beating police of 15-year-old Chad Holley, a then-burglary suspect. A videotape of the beating surfaced last month, and resulted in the termination of several police officers. But it was just another incident in what some Houstonians call a pattern of police brutality. Cofield gives us an update on that case and tells us what’s going on now in the Houston community. Last month the controversy over NFL players and head injuries became all too real when former player Dave Duerson committed suicide with a gunshot to his chest. He left his brain intact to be studied for chronic trauma due to playing professional football. Shafer Suggs, vice president of the Chicago Chapter of the NFL Former Player’s Association, joins us to discuss this tragic story and hotly debated topic. Love, passion, marriage, betrayal, commitment—those are all hallmarks of a great romance novel. Brenda Jackson has been writing them for more than 15 years. With more than 80 novels under her belt, she joins us to discuss her latest, The Silken Thread, and to reveal her secret to consistently reinventing tales of love and passion. College basketball fans rejoice—March Madness has begun! College tournaments are taking place all over the country right now, with teams vying for a spot in the NCAA tournament. And though most of us think that the “big dance” happens after the bracket of 64 is announced, for many players and fans at historically black colleges and universities, the conference tournament is the real big show. Joining us from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament to talk about March Madness HBCU-style is veteran sports journalist Jerry Bembry, contributor to JET magazine and WYPR in Baltimore.
