Every Action Has an Equal and Opposite Reaction
|
Posted By: Ivan Butcher II on March 14, 2011 I am not an engineer, geologist nor a scientist, but as a visionary, this project, The Amalago Bay development, that will be located on the Caribbean Sea, approximately one mile north of Frederiksted, along the shoreline of Gallows Bay, west end of St. Croix, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, raises some major concerns from my perspective. A major concern is for the impact that dredging will have on the total West-end coastline. Evidence exist here on St. Croix that by altering the beaches leads to disastrous environmental shoreline results, ex: Kross Lagoon, once a thriving lagoon and mangrove; Grape Tree Bay, once sandy now a rocky coastline and Davis Bay, where the beach area has to be replenished after a major weather incident. Now, what I find most frightening is the thought of a major earthquake / tsunami striking St. Croix, which scientist have predicted could happen at anytime, in fact, some believe it is long over due. I have had the opportunity to explore the Hams Bluff, Maroon Ridge area and I have been in one of the caves. The cave was not what I had expected. Nothing like the caves I have been in on other Caribbean Islands. It wasn't a cavern, but it was large boulders lodged together much like the boulders on Virgin Gorda. This is an indication that a major event could dislodge large areas in that region of the island. Then there is the blatant disregard for the law that should have ended the blasting at the quarry in the Caledonia area, which is producing fallout that is washing into the sea killing off the marine life. As a youth, learning in school, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. That alone should alarm everyone to such major projected changes. What will be the opposite impact of dredging that area? The recent earthquake that was felt here a month or so ago was more than alarming. My home is in the Blue Mountain region, and my house rolled as if it was a boat, that three big waves passed under it. Now it has been said that St. Croix was once two islands and that scuba-divers can explore up to .25 -.5 miles under the North-side near the Rust a Twist shore-line, which too was once a sandy beach area. What is not known, by many, is that St. Croix is located on the same narrow titanic ridge plate with the southern coastline of Haiti, where they recently had their major earthquake. The difference here is that St. Croix is situated on the edge of that ridge alone and on both sides, north and south, there are deep trenches. Now just imagine, if and when we have a major earthquake, that parts of West-end, exasperated by blasting and dredging, could crumble and landslide in to an Abyss. With the threat of Globe warming, draught, fires, hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis we should be doing everything to preserve our natural resources, or we could end up like Haiti, Deforested. Look at Japan, leaders in disaster preparedness, but they could not have predicted what they are now experiencing and for decades to come. We should learn from their Lesson.
