Commission suspends probe of gender bias in college admissions

Posted By: Stacie Coulter on March 23, 2011 By: Times-Dispatch The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has suspended a yearlong investigation into possible gender discrimination in college admissions. The probe of 19 schools includes the University of Richmond and Virginia Union University. The commission voted 4-3 to shelve the probe because of disagreements over the quality and quantity of data subpoenaed. UR spokesman Brian Eckert said the university had been asked to submit admissions statistics for "a significant number of years." He said the decision to suspend the probe does not necessarily mean it will be ended. The probe began in December 2009 based on news accounts and anecdotal evidence that colleges discriminated against women to promote a better gender mix.
