An Example of Excellence

An Example of Excellence
Posted By: Ivan Butcher II on March 28, 2011

Teens on Teens , Entrepreneurship Workshop, was one of the best youth presentations operated by the students themselves. Well, in this incidence the students were the trainers/instructors.

It is often acknowledged the impact student advisors have in the success of school extra-curricular activities and programs, but, I always say, " It is a good student that makes a good teacher," this was an example of Excellence.

This was the perfect object lesson supporting what I have been saying all along about the employment opportunities expected to be developed with the new resort projects. Our children have not been conditioned to be servants. The youth, who are focused, want to run things, and I support them.

Teens on Teens' entrepreneurship program package demonstrated that these students took the lessons they learned at the Youth Entrepreneurship Retreat and developed their own presentation. This was so well done, I point out to them, that they have created a service business venture. They have a nucleus group, all seniors, that can apply for their business license, and then apply for grants to offer their program to after-school programs and other youth organizations.

Teens on Teens Entrepreneurship Workshop, theme: Making You Stars of Entrepreneurship, a two day program, was held at CTEC, Fri. Mar. 25, from 4 P.M. - 7 PM and Sat. 26, from 9 A.M. - 4 P.M.

Day 1, the program's first session had a guest speaker, trainees introduction to each other, to who they were and to what's their business interest. They were then group. This was followed up with two workshops , Writing a Business Plan and the Empowerment of Entrepreneurship. Their model was the literature provided by SBA and UVI SBDC's out reach programs.

Day 2, they over-viewed lessons and began working on their business plan presentations, scheduled for judging during the afternoon sessions. Lunch and the snack breaks were prepared and served by the CTEC, culinary students.

The results of the students final products were very impressive, each seemed to have sustainability potential. The fact both targeted environmental issues, littering and wastewater runoff, reinforced RC&D's purpose for co-sponsoring the empowerment retreat, held Dec.'10.

These trainees were given the best of an effort made by the student's trainers.

A business program tentatively planned to be held their at CTEC, if this is finalized, Teens on Teens can partner with the businesses in our effort to inspire and promote trade skills and entrepreneurship to the Youth.

Draft Press Release

St. CROIX BUSINESSES TO PARTNER WITH ART CAREER SHOWCASE
The St. Croix Career Tech Education Complex, Sunshine Mall, St. Croix Chamber of Commerce, the Virgin Islands Council of the Arts in partnership with The Butcher Shop presents an Art Career Showcase: Without ART, Man Would Be Naked Up a Tree. The Art Career Showcase will be held this year on, May 13, 2011, at the St. Croix Career Tech Education Complex. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Set-up time is 7:30 a.m. for presenters.)

This kind of follow-up program, put on by the benefactors of RC&D's grant program, is exactly the kind of applicants we need to support the VI RC&D requesting funds form the Federal Government.

I believe if those, who attended the past Natural Resources Conservation Workshops, held in Tifton, Georgia, returned and gave workshop presentations, it may have helped in recruiting today.

All wasn't good, the turned out was not what was expected, but, to me, it was much more manageable, especially for their first effort. There were a large number of students who registered, but didn't show. Follow-up suggestions: research, why they didn't come, what can be done differently and how can making attending more possible?

With the report I am submitting, I am making the motion, that the expenditures incurred by the organizers be give our consideration for reimbursement, in full, and that the advisors time and student trainers in-kind service time be calculated as professional trainers.

Time and money well spent,

Ivan Butcher II
VI RC&D Council Member
