The purpose of the poster is to encourage students to plan and prepare for college. Winners are selected based on the poster’s creativity, visual appeal and overall impact. More than 750 entries were received from 46 states. Josiah Brown, a student at Sycamore High School in Pleasant View, Tennessee, was this year’s winner. Brown received a $5,000 scholarship to the college of his choice. His winning design—“Get Ahead”—will be used to publicize ACT’s 2011-2012 test dates and will be distributed to 30,000 high schools nationwide. Second place finisher Kevin Viratyosin of Morris Area High School in Morris, Minnesota received a $2,500 scholarship for his entry, “Show Them You Can.” Currently a high school junior, Viratyosin plans to major in computer science in college. Alysha Melaragno, who graduated early from Thompson Valley High School in Loveland, Colorado, finished in third place. Her “Gear Up For Success” poster earned her a $1,000 scholarship. Melaragno plans to attend the University of Colorado in Greeley and major in business. She wants to pursue a career in pharmaceutical sales. The ACT is a curriculum-based college admission and placement exam. It measures what students have learned in school.
