Hurt by prejudice, healed by unity

Posted By: Stacie Coulter on March 30, 2011 By: Ron Grossman Perhaps it is because Gwendolyn DuBose Rogers and her beloved college professor, though raised continents apart, had childhoods scarred by bitter, dehumanizing prejudice. Or maybe it's that the teaching didn't end after graduation half a century ago but continued right up until Lore May Rasmussen died in 2009 at 88. Either way, when Rogers talks about Rasmussen, her mentor almost seems to be in the room. "She was gentle in her speech and iron in her will," Rogers, who is African-American, said of Rasmussen, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany. "She understood the harm hatred does." The two met at Talladega College, a historically black institution in Alabama, in the 1940s, when African-Americans were barred from mainstream universities in the South and Jewish professors weren't welcome at elite universities, North or South.
