VA State NAACP Commemorates 43RD Anniversary of King’s Assassination

I was an eighteen year old high school senior on the way home from a school event when I heard the news. It was at the bus stop at the corner of Lombardy and Broad Sts about 2 blocks away from Maggie L. Walker High School. As I approached the bus stop there was an awful commotion. Women were wailing “They shot him” and “They shot Dr. King”. Then someone said “Dr. King is dead”. Women cried openly and the faces of the men standing there wore the juxtaposed mask of deep pain and anger. It is a memory I will never forget. On the ride home I struggled to understand why someone would kill a man whose only crime was petitioning for those things that the US Constitution already guaranteed - life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Today, some 43 years later, I still struggle. Today, the Virginia NAACP is commemorating the anniversary of Dr. King’s death by convening a press conference outside the General Assembly Building across from City Hall at 9th and Broad Sts. Ironically, many of the issues that National Board member, Don Cash, State President, Rev. Dr. J. Rayfield Vines, Jr. and State Executive Director, King Salim Khalfani discussed today, are reminiscent of those Dr. King sought to remedy during the ’60s - job creation, butter vs. bullets governmental spending, the fair drawing of political districting lines, exorbitant energy costs, etc. Today’s gathering was sparse, due to scheduling conflicts, I am told, and I was amazed at the seeming apathy of those who are deeply affected by these issues and elected officials who walked by casually while exchanging greetings with those assembled. Later today, the mentioned NAACP officials will again address the relevant issues during a live on-air discussion on WCLM Radio (1450 AM). The State Conference is planning future events including letter writing campaigns to local elected officials regarding redistricting and the other matters noted above.
