What lessons has the budget debate taught us?

Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on April 09, 2011 While rumors of an impending budget deal swirl around Washington, now is as good a time as any to assess what this latest political sideshow has taught us. Perhaps the most glaring lesson is, every citizen in this country is capable of becoming cannon fodder when political zealots begin to exercise their newly found political muscle. This time women needing planned parenting services were the ones sanctimonious politicians tried to separate from the flock of citizens who reside in this great democratic state. Next time around, it could be social security recipients, the foreign-born or developmentally challenged individuals. Who knows. What we do know is there are political leaders out there to whom nothing is sacred. They are the cold blooded all business variety of the species who supposedly will go to any length to whip the country into sound economic and fiscal shape. Or so they say. What I find so annoying about the entire episode is once again the moral majority has elected to whip us into a frenzy and pick on the most vulnerable members of our society - pregnant women - to prove their budget superiority. Instead of engaging in thoughtful albeit spirited debate about items that have a real impact on budget reduction and fiscal accountability, this group of stellar souls has denigrated the process by orchestrating this tasteless film noir. If their ploy had been successful, we would have had to permanently suspend our ability to disbelieve the shameful horror show some spent hard earned political capital to attend. Perhaps the most valuable lesson we can learn about the ones who have taken their country back is: when faced with their first opportunity to govern responsibly, they chose to construct and poorly produce this unreal reality show that sought to punish the least of these in favor of those with the most.
