Rust College to Celebrate 144th Commencement Exercises April 29-May 1, 2011

Posted By: Stacie Coulter on April 13, 2011 By Adrienne Phillips: Rust College will celebrate its 145th Commencement, with the graduation of approximately 150 seniors earning their degrees in the fields of English, Mass Communications, Political Science, Social Science, Sociology, Social Work, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, English Education, Mathematics, Child Care Management, and Early Childhood Education. Commencement activities will begin April 29, 2011 with a retirement reception honoring four Rust College employees. Friends, family and colleagues will gather Friday night to honor Mrs. Lillie S. McNeal, who has served Rust College as an instructor/professor for 44 combined years. Other honorees are Mr. Clyde Boga, (37 years), Dr. Margaret Delashmet (14 years), and Mrs. Margrett Elliott (37 years). The retirement ceremony will be held at 7:00 p.m. in Shaw Cafeteria. Saturday, April 29th, Rust College will hold its annual Senior Consecration at 6:45 p.m. The ceremony will be held in Morehouse Auditorium of the Doxey Fine Arts Center and led by President David L. Beckley. Commencement activities will reconvene Sunday morning, May 1st, with the Senior/Alumni Breakfast in Shaw Cafeteria at 8:00 a.m. This years speaker for the breakfast is Mrs. Fergenia Hood, Parent Involvement Director for the Institute of Community Services, Inc. (ICS). Mrs. Hood is a 1970 graduate of Rust College. She is a retired public school teacher, having taught for 27 years, mostly in Holly Springs, MS. She was a junior high English and reading teacher before beginning her employment with I.C.S. in 1997. Hood serves on numerous community and church organizations, and was named the 2010 Mississippi Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Ambassador for her dedication to the RIF mission and exemplary volunteer record at I.C.S. Head Start. After the breakfast, graduating seniors will participate in the annual tree planting, a tradition established by President Beckley. Graduating seniors will take photos with President David L. Beckley after the tree planting, in front of the L.M. McCoy Administration Building. The 145th Commencement Exercises will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the McMillan Multi-Purpose Center. Rust College will welcome Dr. Charles H. Beady, Jr. as speaker. Dr. Beady holds a B.A. in advertising, M.A. in Urban Counseling and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education, all from Michigan State University. Dr. Beady has received national recognition as an educational administrator, fundraiser, researcher, author, lecturer, motivator, professional cartoonist and teacher. He has written, illustrated and produced motivational materials, which have been used by student, teacher and parent groups around the country, in the U.S. Virgin Islands and on U.S. military bases in Japan and Korea. His primary areas of research are school climate and motivation.
