Senate Education Committee delays debate on SUNO/UNO merger

Posted By: Stacie Coulter on May 05, 2011 By The Republic: The Senate Education Committee has delayed plans to debate the merger of Southern University at New Orleans with the University of New Orleans. The committee had scheduled a Thursday hearing on the divisive proposal, but its chairman, Bogalusa Sen. Ben Nevers, scrapped the hearing plans, saying the measure instead will be discussed next week. A day earlier, the House Education Committee backed the consolidation efforts. Gov. Bobby Jindal and supporters of the proposed merger say it would give students better educational opportunities at schools that aren't fully using their facilities and have low graduation rates. Opponents say a consolidation would take away a nurturing environment for minority students, poorer students, single parents and others in tough economic straits.
