Posted By: Guest Visitor on May 09, 2011 It seems like only yesterday when Marck Dorvil was discussing an idea of creating a race to raise scholarship dollars for his alma matter Florida A&M University. He thought it would be an excellent opportunity to not only raise money but also create health awareness in the African American community. The idea immediately took off as fellow alum Condra McGee recommended partnering with other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to increase the race’s visibility and participation. Hence, the Inaugural HBCU Alumni Alliance 5K Run/Walk was created. That conversation took place over four years ago and the race has successfully occurred on three prior occasions. In its first year , the race boasted 250 participants. In its second year, the number of participants grew to 750 and included Mayor Shirley Franklin as a guest of honor. In its third year, participation grow to almost 900 participants. This year, estimates are expected to be around 1,200 runners. The success of this event can only be attributed to the hard work the race committee volunteers have put into making the race a first class event. Headed by Dan Ford, the Alumni Alliance Group boasts more than 28 HBCU Colleges and University alumni chapters from across the country. Marck Dorvil is currently serving as the Race Director for the 5K. For more information or to register for the race, please visit: HBCUAlumniAtlanta.com.
