Knights qualify for five NAIA national championship events

Posted By: Eddie Francis on May 10, 2011 Southern University at New Orleans has qualified for four events at the 60th Annual NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The national meet will be held in Marion, Indiana from May 26th to May 28th on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University. The events for which the Knights have qualified include the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash, the 400 meter hurdles, the 4 x 100 meter relay, and the 4 x 400 meter relay. The bid for the 200 meter was locked up by Sheldon Williams, who is currently ranked 8th in the nation. Williams, who won the GCAC crown, qualified at the Mississippi College Twilight meet with a time of 21.23 seconds. Peter McFarlane also qualified for the 200, coming in 29th in the land with a time of 21.65. All-American Norbert Miller, who is ranked 6th, qualified for the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.77 seconds at the GCAC championship where he placed first. Williams qualified with a time of 48.29 at Mississippi College. Miller also qualified for the 400 meter hurdles at the Cole-Lancon Invitational meet at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The Knights remain formidable in the relays. The 6th ranked 4 x 100 team, who won with a time of 41.97 seconds at the conference championship, qualified with a time of 41.28 at the Bulldog Twilight Invitational at Mississippi State University. A mainstay on the national level is SUNO's 4 x 400 relay team, which produced four All-Americans at the 2009 national meet and currently holds the 7th position in the NAIA.
