Virginia Union graduates more than 300 at commencement exercises

Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on May 16, 2011 On Saturday, Virginia Union University awarded more than 300 degrees at its 112th commencement exercises held at Richmond’s Convention Center. The ceremony was the first for Board of Trustees Chairman Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson in his new capacity. Richardson assumed the helm of the liberal arts institution in November 2010. Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Cora B. Marrett, Senior Advisor, National Science Foundation. During her talk, Dr. Marrett assured graduates they had acquired the tools necessary to be successful in their chosen professions. She stressed the need for flexibility and adaptability and recounted the role these attributes had played in her career. Virginia Union has recently re-instituted its ROTC Program and its first graduate, 2LT Jefferson Llewellyn Thondique received his commission and was saluted by his sister, LTC Tawanna Thondique at Saturday’s exercises. Class Valedictorian, Samuel A. Netty, challenged his classmates to persevere in achieving other life goals with the same vigor and determination they had displayed in completing this pivotal phase of their lives.
