The Greatest Gift for Black Youth- A Historically Black Education

The Greatest Gift for Black Youth- A Historically Black Education
Posted By: Dawnn Anderson on June 13, 2011

Prior to the Civil War, a time defined by inequality and great animosity towards Blacks, the thought of higher education for African Americans presented itself as nothing short of a nonexistent entity. This suppressed dream of many Blacks would soon become a reality when the American Missionary Association and the Freedman’s Bureau founded seven Historically Black Colleges/ Universities (HBCU) and forever changed the course of Higher Education for Blacks. Today there are over 100 Historically Black colleges in America. This is where single Black parents and dual households alike leave their children on Move-In day with hopes that they will thrive in the sometimes culturally challenging workplace. It is essential that all people become aware of the great wealth these institutions bring to their communities and students. For they not only achieve their principal goal of educating African Americans but produce intelligent and inspiring leaders of today and tomorrow.

I am currently enrolled as a rising sophomore at the inspiring Spelman College, the #1 HBCU in the nation. As I reminisce on experiences of my freshman year, including First Lady Michelle Obama's keynote address to the Class of 2011, I am deeply humbled to be a part of such an institution with an enduring legacy. It is imperative that one understand the stark reality that distinguishes HBCU'S from predominately White institutions. We students are charged with a mission and regarded as examples upon return home.

Representing positive agents of change in our communities and global audiences abroad following our matriculation we also disseminate positive images of the Black woman and man. Therefore it would be a great disservice and injustice to myself and other students alike if HBCU's were no longer in existence. This is why funding is an essential component to the existence and success of the modern HBCU.

As a student I personally feel the classes are more intimate and the teachers are better characterized as nurturers. Rather than focus on a multitude of students grasping the course material at a larger, public university professors can pay attention to each student and their personal growth. May the topic of skin color arise though a student may find him or herself physically resembling other students in the classroom, everyone has a different story to tell due to the environments in which they were raised. This unique experience proves to be both social and educational that can broaden one’s horizons and perspectives of others.

Historically Black colleges do an immense amount for the African American communities they affect. Its students are educated about their rich culture, uplifted and instilled with great responsibilities as future leaders. They educate other cultural groups about the history of the African American culture and represent one milestone amongst the many when referring to Blacks and the quest for achieving higher education. After discussing the information presented beforehand I strongly believe Historically Black colleges should still exist and urge anyone who thinks otherwise to reconsider their stance. It is vital that people become cognizant of the history and wealth Historically Black Colleges have to offer to their students and communities worldwide.
