TSU group to protest program cuts
|
Posted By: Stacie Coulter on June 23, 2011 By Jennifer Brooks: Opponents of recent program cuts at Tennessee State University are planning a protest at Friday’s meeting of the Tennessee Board of Regents. Members of the Save TSU Community Coalition plan to stage a demonstration at the quarterly board meeting, which starts at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Nashville State Community College. This will be followed by a press conference at noon and a 2 p.m. rally at Jefferson Street Baptist Church, at 2708 Jefferson Street. The protest comes after the university said it would eliminate more than half a dozen majors — including physics, math and Africana studies — in a cost-saving move aimed at programs that produced a handful of graduates. Faculty and students say smaller degree programs still have value. The Save TSU group describes itself as a group of faculty, students, alumni, community members and churches.
