Posted By: lisha elslenbach on July 31, 2011 POMONA, Calif. - Less than two months removed from an appearance at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball program is already making moves in hopes of returning to that stage. CPP head coach Danelle Bishop announced Monday the signing of five student-athletes to national letters of intent. The future Broncos include transfers Ariel Marsh of Citrus College and Shelby Kaenel of Cal Baptist along with incoming freshmen Lisha Elsenbach of Burroughs High School, Lauren Goecke of Prairie High School and Mian Dingle of Maranatha High School. Marsh, a 5-foot-8 guard out of Chino Hills, Calif., led Citrus in points per game during the 2010-11 season with 21.6. She also collected a team-high 89 assists and paced the squad in free-throw percentage at 82.1 percent. While at Ayala High School as a senior, she was nominated as a McDonald's All-American and also earned selection as the Sierra League Most Valuable Player. "Ariel is an extremely smart player," Bishop said. "Because she understands the game so well she makes others around her better. She has a knack for putting the ball in the hoop and creating scoring opportunities not only for herself but others. Most importantly, she is an amazing person and teammate. She will be an immediate impact for our program and we are very blessed to have her." A Burbank, Calif., native and 5-foot-9 guard, Elsenbach averaged 17.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a senior at Burroughs High School. She received the Most Valuable Player honor for the Pacific League while also earning a spot on the All-CIF First Team. Through her four years there, she also was a scholar-athlete. Elsenbach finished second all-time in points for her school. "Lisha is a solid and strong guard," Bishop said. "She had to play the point guard spot all season even though she is a true two guard. It really has helped her game in several aspects. I anticipate that Lisha will surprise a lot of people in the years to come with her play. Her work ethic and strong character will fit right into our program." Dingle, a 6-foot-1 player that can play out of the guard and forward positions, also put together a stellar senior season. While competing for Maranatha High School in 2010-11, she totaled 19.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. She took home All-CIF Second Team honors after earning the title of league Most Valuable Player as a junior. "Mian brings us versatility at the three-four spot," Bishop said. "She will cause mismatch problems for other teams in that she can score outside and inside. She can flat out put the ball in the hoop. She is a great young lady and will be an immediate impact for our team." The only player in the group not from California, Goecke starred for Prairie High School in Brush Prairie, Wash. The 5-foot-8 guard received All-Region selection honors after averaging 8.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Goecke also collected WIAA sportsmanship awards and a GSHL Scholar-Athlete award for a perfect 4.0 grade point average. "Lauren is an extremely selfless person that will do whatever is needed for her team to be successful," Bishop said. "She has had to play several positions in high school and has embraced the opportunity to excel at each spot. She comes from a very successful high school program and will bring that winning confidence. She is an awesome person that will be a tremendous addition to our team." Although Kaenel is set to transfer from Cal Baptist, she redshirted the 2010-11 season so she will still have four years of eligibility at CPP. Before her time at CBU, the 6-foot-1 forward helped the Redlands East Valley High School to plenty of successful seasons. As a senior, Kaenel averaged 9.5 points, 14.0 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and 2.3 steals per game. For her efforts, she was named to the All-Citrus Belt League teams for three-straight years while serving as the team's captain. Kaenel also excelled academically, becoming a scholar-athlete throughout her high school career. "Shelby brings size and depth at the post position," Bishop said. "She is solid and isn't afraid to get in and get physical. Due to her strength, she is able to rebound well. She has a ton of upside. We are excited to have a person of her work ethic and character join our team." If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
