Bynum Named Softball/Volleyball Coach at Saint Augustine's

July 27, 2011 Saint Augustines College has officially announced the hiring of Lynikka Bynum as its softball and volleyball coach. Bynum, a Durham, N.C., native, takes over at Saint Augustines College after five years at Southern Durham High School where she was a successful head coach in volleyball, softball and womens basketball.Lynikka Bynum I would like to sincerely thank President Dr. Dianne Boardley Suber and Athletic Director George Williams for this opportunity, Bynum said. I am looking forward to coaching both programs and will do my very best to keep the Falcon spirit going. Bynum started out as head junior varsity coach as well as assistant varsity coach in basketball at Southern Durham from 2006 to 2009. With Bynum at the helm, Southern Durham won or shared three straight PAC-Six junior varsity league crowns. As an assistant varsity coach, Bynum helped Southern Durham reach the third round of the state playoffs twice. During the same three-year period, Bynum was head volleyball and softball coach. During her tenure, the volleyball team won the league sportsmanship award and posted the highest grade point average of all the athletic teams at the school. The softball team qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in 10 years. Bynum also found time during her busy schedule to be the assistant coach of the Durham Lady Ballerz AAU basketball team from 2006 to 2008.

She also started the LIFT program at Southern Durham for at-risk girls. In 2009, Bynum was elevated to head varsity womens basketball coach and it immediately paid dividends. She directed Southern Durham to the state playoffs in 2010 and 2011. Before joining the coaching ranks, Bynum was a three-sport letterman from 1995 to 1999 at Saint Pauls College where she was captain of the volleyball, basketball and softball teams. Bynum established herself academically her first year by posting the highest grade point average in the freshman class. As a senior, Bynum was president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was one of two CIAA student-athletes to attend an NCAA national leadership conference through SAAC. Bynum graduated at Saint Pauls with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1999. After graduating, Bynum remained at her alma mater from 1999 to 2000 as an assistant womens volleyball and basketball coach. Bynum lettered in four sports from 1991 to 1995 at Hillside High School in Durham, N.C. She was captain of the volleyball, basketball and softball teams in addition to running track. Bynum played on the basketball team which finished 30-1 overall and appeared in the state semifinals her senior year. The St. Aug volleyball team returns four All-CIAA players from last seasons squad which won the Southern Division title and reached the CIAA Tournament finals. They are Kathryn Tokarski, Keisha Parris, Brittany Hicks and Roxanne Smith. The Lady Falcons posted their best season since 2003.
