What impact have recent political events had on you?

Posted By: Rudolph Hickman on August 09, 2011 During the past few weeks, Americans sat in front of their tv’s and watched in stark terror as Congress struggled to decide whether it would give President Obama authority to raise the country’s debt limit. After days of torturous debate and intense negotiations, President Obama signed an agreement on August 2, which enabled America to meet its financial obligations domestically and abroad. While few were satisfied with the terms of the agreement, most breathed a sigh of relief safe in the knowledge that the country had dodged a major bullet. That relief was short-lived. On August 6th, Standard and Poors, one of the Big Three credit-rating agencies, downgraded the country’s bond rating. To many this was like a kick in the gut causing me and others to revisit the very horrors that we had so hoped to avoid in the day’s leading to August 2nd. One result of the S&P action, was an immediate and steep stock market dive so deep it has yet to resurface, As if this weren’t bad enough, on Monday, Standard and Poors downgraded the ratings of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two governmental agencies that provide consumer mortgage assistance. While the specific consequences of this action are still playing out, the immediate effect was a second day of horrendous stock market losses. Amid all this less than joyful news, I kept wondering how these actions might affect me. After all, I am nearing the age where social security is clearly within view. As I mused about the prospect of receiving my first checks, my thoughts were re-directed to my daughter and other young people. How have these events affected the young? What impact have they had on how you view the current political system and your futures? And most importantly how would you address the problems the country faces?
