With three players taken in the 2011 NFL draft, the game also had a record high 32 players to sign free agent contracts with league teams. “In just two years the game has produced over 50 NFL players through both draft picks and free agent contracts,” HBCU Bowl CEO and founder of the game Derick Moore said. “The vision of this game is now a reality and we encourage fans and alumni of each of the 42 schools represented in last year’s game to come out and support the best of the best in black college football.” Johnny Culbreath, SCSU South Carolina State’s Johnny Culbreath, Florida A&M’s Curtis Holcomb and Alabama A&M’s Frank Kearse were all taken in the seventh round of this year’s NFL draft. Culbreath, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive tackle, was taken by the Detroit Lions as the 209th overall pick. A native of Monroe, Ga., he was one of the most dominant linemen at South Carolina State as well as in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference during his collegiate career. Going for the “blue collar” player, the San Francisco 49ers drafted Florida A&M corner back Holcomb with the 250th pick. Known for his rigorous work ethic, the Miami, Fla. native led the Rattler’s defense with three interceptions, 41 tackles (33 solo) and three sacks. A&M’s Kearse is a 6-foot-4, 315 pound second team defensive tackle All-SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conferece) recipient. He finished the season with 57 tackles (30 solo), including 14 for a loss of yardage. More: http://hbcusportsonline.com/media/2011/08/...
