Miss Hampton University featured in Ebony magazine as Top 10 HBCU queen!!

Posted By: Stacie Coulter on August 18, 2011 By Samieh Shalash: Dressed in a little black dress, stiletto-high platform heels and showing off toned legs, Miss Hampton University is listed as "The Dream Girl" in Ebony magazine's annual campus queens edition. Desiree Williams, a 2011 HU graduate, was flown to Atlanta for a photo shoot along with nine other campus queens who were among the Top 10 vote-getters in Ebony's online competition for queens from historically black colleges and universities. According to Ebony's September issue, more than 2 million votes were cast. Williams, 22, says she was the top vote-getter with more than 1 million clicks during the week-long contest in late May. HU helped boost her vote count, sending daily reminder emails to all staff and posting links on the university's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Be the first to know! This is the second year Ebony has used online voting to select queens to feature instead of running submitted photos of all HBCU queens. Last year, the featured queens were dressed in jeans and t-shirts. This year, Ebony dressed each of them in short black dresses, chunky jewelry and tall heels. In a two-page spread of all 10 queens styled from head to toe titled "Queens run the world," it proudly proclaims the theme. "Traditional white gowns and tiaras? Nope. We went with a fashion staple: the little black dress. Behold!" While the "edgy" theme doesn't reflect her personal style, Williams said she had fun during the July photo shoot in Atlanta. "I thought it was a really fun concept," she said. "The picture turned out to be a little more racy than even I anticipated, but I think it was done tastefully." In a Q&A published with her photo, Williams describes herself as "fit and healthy," says she teaches fitness-basedyoga, and that one person she'd choose to meet is Michelle Obama because of their similar values. Her most-treasured possession?---Her phone. "The crown and the trophy are nice," she told Ebony. "But my phone, I feel like I would be dead without it." Williams earned a bachelor's in health & physical education in May and said she's returning to HU this fall to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy.
